Savannah in Savannah: Night 1

Friday, August 28, my friend John and I left for a weekend get-a-way. John had to drive to St. Augustine while I drove us to Savannah. It was about a three hour car ride, which for my friends and family at home, it's a similar drive from Spirit Lake to Des Moines. The car ride consisted of John and I listening to Il Divo, getting an idea of what we would like to do over the weekend, and John getting excited over the first of many pictures he had taken. We arrived at our airbnb at 7:30 p.m. We were greeted by the cutest dog named Coco. The owners of the house greeted us too, giving us a tour of their lovely home. I enjoyed the idea of having the owners living there for it gives a more bed and breakfast feel. John; however, had to get used to this. After the tour of this gorgeous home (built in 1903) John and I got ready to go out for the night. I'm so used to traveling with my parents so going out after we get to a location was out of my comfort zone, but it was worth it. I enjoyed the entire evening! John really wanted fish and chips so he found the “Six Pence Pub''. Let me start off by saying that parking in Savannah is difficult and if you know how to parallel park, then you will have no problem in this city. Parking after 8 p.m. is free and the garages are five dollars a day. This shouldn’t be an issue for people unless you are like me and cannot remember where you park your car or which garage you parked your car in. For any iPhone users out there, the parked car feature on your maps is a life saver, especially if you are in a city at night.

Our airbnb for the weekend

Getting ready for the night
We walked to our restaurant “Six Pence Pub'' and low behold, a red telephone booth! It brought back many memories of my time in London. I, of course, ran to the booth only to find out it doesn’t open! I was upset I couldn’t go inside for a picture, but it was still nostalgic seeing it. John and I walked inside and got our table. It was a very cute looking pub, very close to those in the UK. John ordered a Guinness, making me jealous because I couldn’t have one. After taking a look at the menu I noticed they didn’t have any vegan options for me so I had to get a side of rice and vegetables. For any vegans out there, avoid this restaurant if you are wanting a good vegan meal. John couldn’t get his fish and chips because the building is too old for the kitchen to have an air-fryer! But they did have shepherd's pie for the classic alternative.

John and I decided to walk around for a little bit after dinner to see Savannah during the night. We saw many creepy allies, cockroaches, and people partying. I found myself living in my fantasy world while also feeling a bit overwhelmed that I was in Savannah, but John thankfully pulled me back into reality. I shifted gears and kept my surroundings guarded and safe while still enjoying the night. We walked past the Savannah Theatre, seeing my name huge and lit up! I am seeing my name in lights! At least I know what it looks like if I never become a famous singer. I see my name everywhere and it is very odd, but I am slowly getting used to it. As we started walking towards the theatre, John wanted to take a picture of me in front of it. I stepped forward for a picture and a local walked by asking if he could take a picture of me. I accepted his offer, took a few photos, and we had a good conversation with the gentleman. We parted ways. John and I can travel well because we are both architectural buffs. While driving into Savannah, we both were in awe of the houses and buildings in the city. Savannah at night is still very beautiful but a little eerie (as it’s the most haunted city in America). Apart from being in the most haunted city, I was beginning to find myself falling in love with the city of Savannah.

Our night was coming to an end, but let's not forget I didn't know where I parked my car the entire weekend. I pulled up my maps to lead John and I to my car. It was dark and we had a ten minute walk. Ladies and gents, please remember where you park your car in a city during the night. It will save a lot of headaches and arguments. Aside from this, we found the car and made our way back to the airbnb where we fell fast asleep after our late night.
This was our first night in Savannah, but I will assure you there are more stories and places to talk about for our last two days. Stay tuned for more laughs and excitement!
